"Florence Nightingale: Icon and Iconoclast", R. E. Forster, History Review, No. 66, pp. 7-8. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was a British citizen who, depressed and uneasy with the opulent circumstances of her upbringing, found her life's calling in elevating the profession of nursing worldwide. Though initially unwelcome, she came to prominence during the Crimean War and was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" after her habit of making rounds at night to tend injured soldiers. Nightingale laid the foundation stone of professional nursing with the principles summarized in the book Notes on Nursing:

"Florence Nightingale was born in the Italian city which named her in 1820.
Her early life is nowadays popularly presumed to have been comfortably unexceptional. In fact her father was a well-off Sheffield banker's son who inherited a large fortune from a Derbyshire uncle. That he could afford to buy a second country estate of 4,000 acres, Embley Park in Hampshire, for £125,000 in 1825, proclaimed enormous wealth. ... The company there certainly sparkled for the house guests at Embley included the political heavyweight Lord Palmerston, the future seventh Earl of Shaftsbury who introduced Florence to the 'delights' of government statistics, the mathematician Charles Babbage and  Charles Darwin. ...

"Florence would later use her family's wealth and connections to good advantage. But inwardly she was anything but at ease. Predisposed to ill-health and depression, increasingly uneasy with the opulence around her, and above all frustrated that her talents were being honed for no practical purpose, her teens and twenties were often desperately unhappy. ... [Then] Britain and France declared war on Russia in March 1854.

"On 20 September 1854, Allied forces gained victory over the Russians at the Battle of the River Alma. Like many however, Nightingale was moved less by stories of soldierly heroism than by reports of the privations suffered by the wounded. In his report of 13 October to The Times, William Howard Russell focused specifically on hospital conditions 'worthy only of the savages of Dahomey.' Army nursing was, as it always had been, carried out by a mixture of male army pensioners and troops who were convalescing. The superior French medical provision, by contrast, included Sisters of Charity. 'These devoted women,' Russell informed the British public, 'are excellent nurses,' ... The government was stung into action and [family friend] Sidney Herbert was Secretary at War. On 21 October he proposed that she head a nursing party at government expense. There was, he added, 'but one person in England that I know of who would be capable of organizing such a scheme.' Serene whilst those around her flustered, Nightingale left London on 21 October as Superintendent of the Female Nursing Establishment in the English General Military Hospitals in Turkey. With her went 38 volunteers.

"Nightingale's party, entered the largest British base hospital in the war, the Barrack Hospital at Scutari, in Turkey, on 4 November. It was immediately clear that they were unwelcome with many in the army and medical hierarchy. Nightingale responded by setting her charges to work on such useful menial tasks as making bandages and scrubbing floors. Yet four days later, overwhelmed by the influx of casualties from the Battle of Inkerman, doctors summoned their assistance.

"Over the next weeks Nightingale's legend was born. A 15-20 hour working day was not untypical for her. She was literally 'hands on', whether killing rats or assisting with amputations. Soon her nurses were tending over 2,000 patients in beds I8 inches apart. John Macdonald of The Times immortalized her as 'a ministering angel' ... in these hospitals, and as her slender form glides quietly along each corridor, every poor fellow's face softens with gratitude at the sight of her'. In the midst of a military campaign whose progress was equivocal her success could be reported unambiguously."

Quintereal Javoris Kelly of Goodwater, AL was killed in a shooting at a nightclub in a rural area near Alexander City.

BPC Athlete Killed

Wednesday, February 10, 2010 -- A senior basketball player at Brewton Parker College was killed over the weekend while he was back home in Alabama.

ImageThe Coosa County Sheriff's office says 22-year-old Quintereal Javoris Kelly of Goodwater, AL was killed in a shooting at a nightclub in a rural area near Alexander City. The incident happened about two o'clock Sunday morning and police say an arrest has been made in the case.

Kelly transferred to Brewton Parker two years ago and played guard for the Barons.  Coach John D. Jones said Kelly was one of his favorite guys to coach and that he was deeply saddened by the loss.

The college held a memorial service for Kelly Tuesday and is dedicating its Thurdsay night game to his memory.  Baron fans are being urged to wear orange to the game as a tribute.

The college issued the following press release regarding his death.

"Tragedy struck the Brewton-Parker College men’s basketball team when senior guard Quintereal Kelley died late Saturday night (Feb. 9) while visiting friends back home in Alabama.

On Sunday evening, grief counselors and BPC administrators were at the college to help the young man’s teammates and coaches deal with his sudden and unexpected loss.

Kelley was a two-year member of the Barons basketball team after transferring from Jefferson Davis Community College.  He was known for his toughness, competitive spirit, and his outstanding ability as a three-point shooter.  Most recently, he led the Barons to a key SSAC victory over Southern Wesleyan with 19 points on 5-8 shooting from the 3-point line.

“He was one of my favorite guys to coach,” said Head Coach John D. Jones.  “He was a fighter who always had his teammate’s backs.  They knew that and loved him for it.  Off the court, he was a well-spoken and respectful young man who had a world of potential to be successful in life.  I am deeply saddened by his loss.”

“We all feel horribly deprived of this fine young man who contributed so much to our BPC family.  I am comforted by knowing that he acknowledged his acceptance of Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at a campus worship event for our Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter over a year ago.  That knowledge helps me remind all of his friends, as well as myself, that our separation is short but our reunion will be eternal” said David R. Smith, president of the College.

Affectionately known around campus as “Q”, his gregarious personality and confident demeanor gained respect and admiration from all who knew him well.  Q was also a consistent 3.0 performer in the classroom and was on track to earn his degree from Brewton-Parker.

A memorial service was held on the BPC campus on Tuesday morning.  Rev. Bucky Kennedy, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Vidalia, was the speaker.  Two members of the basketball team also shared their thoughts and memories of their fallen teammate.  Nate Green spoke of Q’s devotion to his team, and his unique quality of always telling you what he was thinking, without fear. “I respected him for that,” said Greene.  Brandon Barron emphasized Q’s strong commitment as a friend to his friends.  “He was a true brother to me,” said the fellow Alabama native and team captain.

Funeral services will be held in Goodwater, Ala., on Mon., Feb. 15 and will be attended by all members of the men’s basketball team."

Dr. Martha Lee Bozeman Fay "Bill"/"Billie"/"Willie"/Martha/ "Dr. Fay" -

SAVANNAH - Martha B. Fay, Ph.D., 96, died peacefully on December 19, 2009 at Hospice Savannah of multiple old-age related problems. Born on November 18, 1913 in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas, she was the second child of the late Virgil Fackney Bozeman, Sr. and Ethel Lee O'Roark Bozeman. She was predeceased by her brother Virgil Fackney Bozeman, Jr. of Moline, IL and her sister Mary Frances "Prontz" Bozeman Janavitz of Pittsburgh, PA and later Tucson, AZ. She was a graduate of Moline High School (1931) and of Rockford College, Rockford, IL (1935). She received a Ph.D. in Zoology from University of Illinois with a specialty in genetics (1945). Her first professional positions were in the field of genetics. She married Dr. Richard William Fay (1912-1972) at the Unitarian Church in Philadelphia, PA on September 19, 1941. Richard, an entomologist in the U. S. Public Health Service in Jefferson City, MO (1942-44), was transferred to Savannah, GA in 1944. During their years in Savannah, their home in Gordonston (1954-2006), was the focal point where their three children Mary, Bill, and Libby grew and prospered. In 1954, Martha experienced four months of "single" motherhood, while her husband Richard served with the World Health Organization [WHO] in Egypt. From 1959 to 1961, the entire family moved to Geneva, Switzerland, when Richard was posted there. Martha survived using her 25-year old college French, while her children studied in French in the Swiss public schools. Returning to Savannah in the summer of 1961, she became the primary caregiver for her mother-in-law, Jeanne Louise Wuillemen Fay (1961), of her husband's aunt, Marguerite Adele Wuillemen Schultz (1961-67), and of her husband (1969-72). Dr. Fay taught Science at Armstrong Junior College (now Armstrong Atlantic State University) (1944-49). From 1949 to 1984, with the aid of her trusty housekeeper, Mrs. Inez Jackson, while her children were growing up, she was involved in many community activities beginning as a Brownie Scout leader and PTA memberships. She served on the boards of many organizations, including Girl Scouts of America, Family Counseling Center, Traveler's Aid, United Way of Savannah, American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters, and the Interfaith Interracial Committee. Dr. Fay was the Project Administrator of the Child Evaluation Center (1977-82). She was elected as a member of the Savannah Chatham County Board of Education (1975-86) and as its President (1987-91). She served on the Chatham County Board of Health (1984-2008). The last three years of her life were spent at Savannah Square Retirement Community in Savannah. Her older daughter oversaw this move, making her "cottage" into a pleasant residence for her mother. Her final move to Candler-St. Joseph Hospital occurred on December 13, 2009. Martha was an avid reader with wide interests ranging from mystery stories to genetics advances. Her Gordonston home garden contained 2 spectacular live oak trees, many tree camellias, and 60-year-old crape myrtles. She knitted many presents for family members. She led a very active social life. She received many honors during her long life, including her induction as the first female Diplomate as a Ph.D. Medical Geneticist of the American Society for Human Genetics (1982), the Clara Barton Sisterhood Award of the Unitarian Universalist Church (1993), and the Tony Buttimer Award from the Georgia Democratic Party (2002). In 2008, the crowning jewel was the renaming of the Chatham County Health Department after her. The honor was kept a complete secret from her until the actual ceremony, and when the curtain covering the wall of the building was pulled aside, she was totally surprised at both the honor and the praise of those attending. Martha gave many school, public, and church lectures on a variety of topics. As a board-certified medical geneticist, she insured that communications in matters of genetics counseling between physicians, patients, and their families resulted in patients achieving their full potential. Over the years, Martha hosted a variety of foreign visitors to Savannah - African, Asian, and European medical personnel, foreign exchange students, and Tibetan monks. Martha attended the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah from 1965 until her death, holding almost every position on the Board of Trustees except treasurer, and contributing to almost every committee of the church. She is survived by her three children, Mary Jacqueline Fay Nelson of Bowie, MD, William Martin "Bill" Fay of Athens, GA, and Elizabeth Adele "Libby" Fay of Lakewood, CO; by 3 grandsons, Richard William Fay, John Martin Fay, and Harrison Kimball Fay, all of Athens, GA; by her sister-in-law Mrs. Jeanne S. Bozeman of Naples, FL; by three nieces, Mrs. Anya Bozeman Taylor of Nyack, NY, Mrs. Carol Bozeman Hunt of Naples, FL, and Mrs. Gloria Janavitz of Pittsburgh, PA; and by two nephews, Rev. Virgil Fackney Bozeman III of Augusta, ME and Mr. David Bozeman of Willowbrook, IL. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery. A public memorial service will follow at 1:00 PM on January 23, 2010 at the First African Baptist Church, 23 Montgomery Street, Savannah, GA.
